On Monday 2nd March 2026 we began our 48th annual Social Justice Week in Loreto St.Michaels. Our theme this year is ‘Women – Rooted, Responsive and Relevant’ and we looked upon the Mary Ward Schools Compass to guide our main focus this year.
Students were immersed in many different issues including a talk on the theme ‘Strong Women, Strong Roots’, by former student and MEP Nina Carberry.
We welcomed our Erasmus+ group who have traveled to be with us from Goerdeler Gynasium Paderborn, Germany and we are delighted to have them join us for the week’s events.
The 5th year Social Justice Group took the helm with peer-teaching an active workshop on the theme of ‘Fairtrade and Ethical Consumption’ to First Year students. They produced wonderfully insightful displays on these important topics.
TY and LCA students attended a screening of the documentary ‘Mrs.Robsinson’, arranged with our local Arc Cinema in the town. Unfolding a story about female leadership, human rights activism and climate action, MRS ROBINSON tells the inspirational life story of change-maker Mary Robinson: Ireland’s first female President, a pioneering UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the successor of Nelson Mandela as Chair of The Elders. The students found the documentary to be very inspiring and the topic of many conversations afterwards.
