Hello. My name is Leah O’Toole. I am honoured to fulfil the role of Head Girl here in Loreto St. Michael’s. This position has been a respected part of Loreto’s tradition for generations and I am delighted to carry it forward.

I hope that as Head Girl, I can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others— whether through small everyday acts or by offering encouragement whenever it is needed. My aim is to help foster a positive, uplifting environment and to work closely with others so that, together, we can achieve the very best for the Loreto community.

As quoted by Maya Angelou, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” I am committed to reflecting this in my role, ensuring that every student feels valued, supported and heard.

I came to Loreto from St. Stephen’s National School, and even now, it is so nice to see some of the students I spent my earlier years with walking through the corridors. There is something truly special about growing up together and still sharing a school community, even as we have all found our own paths here. Coming to Loreto was a new and exciting experience for me. When I first walked through the doors of Loreto, the world was still recovering from the Coronavirus pandemic. This meant masks, distancing, and for a period of time, online classes. But even through the chaos, I felt part of something. We supported each other, laughed through the awkward Zoom call moments, and made true friendships, even from two metres apart. It was a strange and uncertain time to start secondary school, but even with the social distancing and half-hidden faces, St. Michael’s became a home to me. I made wonderful friends and quickly learned that the spirit of Loreto wasn’t something that could be dimmed. Even during tough and unpredictable times we found connection, kindness, community and hope.

Over the years, I’ve thrown myself into many of the amazing things this school has to offer, from basketball, student council, soccer and baking competitions to musicals, fundraising, olympic handball, and so much more. Each one of these experiences has helped shape who I am today. I was not particularly talented or experienced in all of those things but if I have learned anything, it’s that sometimes the best thing you can do is sign up for something, even if it terrifies you a little. That is where the growth happens and where the fun begins!

The opportunities I have been fortunate to embrace during my time here, have given me a voice and pushed me out of my comfort zone. And while I’ve learned about leadership, teamwork, and responsibility. I have also had so much fun along the way. My experiences here have given me memories, laughs, and friendships I will always cherish.

Academically, I have found my passions too. I particularly enjoy science and I am excited about the possibility of continuing my studies in it after I graduate. STEM is something this school has always cultivated and encouraged, which is especially important for young women like me. I also enjoy Irish, French, English and Music. I have discovered a real appreciation for language and culture and I have found a way to channel my love for piano into something academically rewarding. Through my time at Loreto, I’ve learned to value education as a remarkable privilege. As Malala Yousafzai once said, “One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world.”

What makes Loreto truly special, though, is its people. This school is filled with incredibly talented individuals from artists, musicians, athletes, leaders, linguists and so many more, each contributing in their own way. There is a place for everyone in Loreto. Whether you are quiet or outgoing, sporty or artistic, you’ll find your path, your people, and your purpose.

We are all diverse, each with our own unique personalities, backgrounds and gifts, yet we are united by one shared bond, the spirit of Loreto.

It is unbelievable how quickly the days turn into years here. I can vividly remember my first day, and it really does feel like it was just yesterday. I now realise how precious my remaining time in Loreto is. As swiftly as the years have passed, I can now reflect on the growth, memories and experiences that have shaped my journey here.

I am beyond proud to be a Loreto girl and it is an identity I will carry with me long after I leave these halls. I know that the Loreto values of sincerity, justice, truth, freedom and joy will continue to guide me in whatever comes next.
