In the early 80’s a decision made by the Loreto Order to focus on justice as a central part of the education of young people led us to look at the place of social justice in our school curriculum. As a result of this, a special post was created to promote social justice in our school. Initially this involved one teacher but now has developed into a committee involving teachers and students.
We in St. Michael’s see the promotion of social justice as a central part of the work we do. The highlight of the school year is social justice week held in March every year. During this week guest speakers are invited into school to highlight issues of poverty and inequality, racism and refugees, human rights and care of the environment.
In the past we have had the pleasure of welcoming among others Fr.Peter Mc Verry, President Mary McAleese, broadcastors Ann Daly and Eanna Ni Lamhna, Fr.Sean Mc Donagh, an eminent anthropologist, Ms Helen McEntee TD, Mr.Noel Dempsey T.D. and Nuala Aherne from the Green party and many other politicians. As well as guest speakers, issues are highlighted through the media of workshops, drama, music and art, debates and special liturgies. The National Council for Development Education (NCDE) very kindly fund our activities and as a result the scope of the week is continually expanding.
