Social Justice Week 2025
A huge thank you and well done to everyone in our school community who participated in our 47th Annual Social Justice Week March 3-7th 2025.
The week was based on our Loreto Values of Truth, Justice, Sincerity, Freedom and of course, Joy!
There was peer teaching of 1st and 2nd years by 20 super 5th years. They ran 3 two-hour workshops on Fairtrade & Sustainability, Fast Fashion and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. There was great fun, learning and plenty of creativity (see photos!).
Guest speakers spoke with various year groups about issues ranging from The Homeless Crisis (Fr Peter Mc Verry), Loreto Rumbek, The Importance of Educating Girls (Sr. Anne Farren), Food Waste and Effective Recycling (Craig Benton: Compost Ireland), Food Miles (Self-Help Africa), Development (World-Wse Global Schools) and Global Justice (causes and impacts) (Trócaire). Students engaged with each guest via Q&As and hands-on activities.
Teaching resources based on justice issues were used in Business, English, Gaeilge, Geography, C.S.P.E., Religion and in TY modules. Development Education is important to teaching and learning in St Michael’s.
Students created fantastic learning resources that are hanging up around the school.
